Easing the Passing of the Dead

Some of you may know the old George Burns joke, " Every morning when I wake up, I read the Obituaries. If I'm not in them, I have breakfast." I know that I'm not quite that old yet, but it does seem that I'm at the age where every time I open Facebook, I see news that one more friend has passed. It seems that I only talk to my old friends from back in the day when we're memorializing one of our fallen.

There were two passings this weekend. Two people I was friends with a hundred years ago from two distinct communities. Two dead friends are exponentially more to process.

I called a friend who dated C once upon a time. She was one of his true loves. He told me that he thought one day they would sit down again, and he'd be able to share things left unsaid. Apologies, insights, and expressions of care. Who can't relate to that? Who doesn't wish that final door hadn't closed before we mustered up some courage?

It took me a moment to realize that people I haven't spoken to in a decade dying is not about me. My mind always wants to make it about me. And I've got enough grief stored in my tissues that it doesn't take much trigger some up to the surface.

Then the wiser voice in my head spoke to me, "This is why we have prayers to ease the passage of the dead." I thought of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and its psychedelic descendant, The Psychedelic Experience. I remembered that service is the key to overcoming self-centeredness and that there is no reason that service should end just because someone dies.

So I prayed. I allowed my heart and mind to focus on my friends and their journey instead of on my sentimentality. It was peaceful. I think this is the way.

Fortuitously, the next day was a worldwide meditation gathering in honor of David Lynch. I showed up with about 20 of my students. It was lovely. The Community of Tam Meditators is spread all across the globe, so our group practice always has a decentralized feel, but it was so sweet to know that at that moment, we were tuned into an even broader community. It was wonderful to offer our respects to such a brilliant artist who contributed so much to our world. It was also ever so poignant to know that we were offering blessings for the recently departed and to be able to contemplate easing the passage. More prayers. It was lovely.

No one gets out alive. If we're lucky, we get to have a full, rich, ecstatic human experience before we go. We get to experience the full range, and that includes grief. I don't want to suggest otherwise. It all has its time and place.

So this email goes out to everyone who has ever lost someone and everyone who's ever been lost. May your road be easy.

Exploring EMBARK Psychedelic Therapy with Alex Belser - January 27th at 8pm Eastern

Our Monthly Golden Road Masterclass

Join us for a discussion on the challenges and opportunities in psychedelic therapy, highlighting EMBARK, a new model detailed in a clinical handbook from Oxford University Press. Designed for both practitioners and researchers, EMBARK provides guidelines on preparation, medication sessions, and integration. We’ll explore recent research, including a clinical trial where 79% of participants experienced full remission from depression within three weeks, leading to FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation. We’ll also discuss the growing interest in EMBARK, with over 4,000 clinicians enrolling in its free, open-access video training.

Alex Belser, PhD, is a clinical scientist, author, and licensed psychologist. His psychedelic research at NYU, Yale University, and in multi-site clinical trials has explored the potential of psilocybin, DMT, ketamine, and MDMA therapies to alleviate human suffering. His latest book, EMBARK Psychedelic Therapy for Depression: A New Approach for the Whole Person (Oxford University Press) offers a clinical guide to working with psychedelic medicines.
