God, Grant me the Confidence of Beautiful ChorusI love Beautiful Chorus. Their music is excellent. I've listened to them in various states of consciousness, and they don't miss. I'm listening to them right now. They're also funny. Their presence on Instagram makes me chuckle. And, they are confident. They know they're great. They know their music heals the soul. They don't shrink from it. The other day, they posted this video. It says: Hi, We're Beautiful chorus. We've gotten you through stressful workdays Challenging yoga classes Childbirth Grief Now we're going to get you through the holiday season. It's an ad for their Christmas album. I'm glad they plugged it. Somya is a real big fan of the season, and Christmas has been on constantly for the past week, and this record is a welcome addition to the rotation. These ladies are as tapped into the spirit of the season as anyone. It comes through. But the point is, they own it. They've gotten us through, and they know they've gotten us through, and they're not afraid to say it. They are fully confident that they will continue to get us through. All the evidence points to this. No reason they wouldn't. No reason for false humility. Evidence-based confidence. This is the kind of confidence I want for myself, and the kind of confidence I want for you, especially those of you out there who are budding coaches, therapists, guides, and healers. May you have this level of confidence. The world is full of overconfident healers. Just check out Adam's Healing from Healing page, or Jules Evans' Ecstatic Integration blog. The blithely enthusiastic are everywhere. God Bless'em. But so many of the people I mentor, train, or coach are on the opposite side of the spectrum. They lack a level of confidence that would make them more useful to the people they serve, or could serve. And the really wild thing is, they lack confidence in their abilities despite evidence to the contrary. They tell me stories of happy clients, resolved issues, and successful journeys. And yet, in their minds, they're still not enough. Unfortunately, confidence isn't transferable; we can't give it to each other. We can validate each other (you're enough (yes, you!)) - We offer motivation (Go get'em tiger), but ultimately, your confidence is an inside job. We can't think ourselves into confidence. We need to act our way into it. We build confidence by acting from a commitment to our values consistently, over a long period of time. We show up and do something challenging. We make sure we're motivated to grow and improve, even if it's in small increments. We do the right thing, even if it's hard. We stay present and non-reactive under stress. And, we allow ourselves to celebrate our victories. It's the holidays. It's time to celebrate. It's time to give ourselves a gift. Give yourself the gift of recognition. That's your homework for this week. When you crush it, feel it. Allow the victory to move through your system, nourishing you, brightening you. Let even the smallest win decorate the sacred tree of your body with the shiniest of baubles and the brightest of stars. May you have not only the confidence of Beautiful Chorus, but the strength to create it for yourself. The Essence of Practice is a Kind Mind I was listening to a talk about The Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life by Shantideva, tuaght by Khenpo Sherab Sangpo. One thing he said really stood out. He said, "The essence of dharma practice is a kind mind" He boiled it down to its essence in one short sentence. It's not that complicated. The mind makes it complicated. The mind that would rather be right than kind. What does this have to do with Psychedelics? Everything. I talk to people all the...
Good Pain vs. Bad Pain, and Knowing the Difference I just completed a 111 hour fast. I was planning on doing 120, a full five days, but I ended it a little early. On day three and four I thought to myself, I could do this forever. But I woke up on the fifth... And I just felt terrible. Not like the little discomforts I felt over the weekend, a little wobbly, a little hungry or weak. I felt real bad. So I ended the fast with grace. As someone who has a habit of fighting through difficulties...
Get some of that devotional catharsis Don’t sleep on devotional catharsis. Personally, It’s my favorite kind. So much of the healing world, the psychedelic world is focused on releasing trauma. That’s all fine and good, but that’s not all there is. Sometimes in a yoga class, the breathing is just right, and the movement is just right, and trevor hall sings just the right line, and I’m overwhelmed by the beauty of creation, and then infinite love that’s surrounding and moving through me. The...
