Psychedelics, with or without therapyNot everyone wants therapy or coaching. Not everyone is looking for a structured plan for growth or healing. They might not want a ceremony full of elements from a foreign culture or religion. They just want to try psychedelics in an environment that is safe and supportive. Is that too much to ask? Is there something wrong with this? Our modern therapeutic model suggests that there is, that we must have the highest intentions, but I'm not so sure. I recently spoke with a coach who was working with a client who fell into this category. They wanted psychedelic facilitation, but dodged any efforts at looking deeper, taking accountability, or participating in a process of self-transformation. Their coach was understandably frustrated. They wanted to do a good job after all. But we can't make people want what they don't want. We can tell them what we offer and how it could help. Maybe we can even offer a session to show how we work. But we can't force desire. We can only use our best judgment to determine whether we offer what they are looking for. Sometimes it's a match, and sometimes it isn't. When I was training yoga teachers, one came to me complaining that her client 'just wanted buff shoulders.' Here she was, ready to transmit the deepest spiritual teachings available. Could she in good conscience throw the sutras out the window, and instead simply focus on traps and delts? When I first explore working with people, I have a process to get us on the same page. I've got specific questions about what they're looking for, and I invite them to ask questions about what I offer. There's no hard sell, there's just an honest look at rightness of fit. If you're a coach, therapist, or facilitator (whatever those words mean to you), I'm not going to make any judgments about what you offer or how you offer it. At least not knowing you! It's easy to judge from behind a keyboard, but i'll resist for now. But I will tell you that you need a system for getting clear. A series of questions that works to determine the rightness of fit for a potential relationship. Something that enables us to put all our cards on the table and be informed about what we're getting into. And, I will tell you that I can teach you my system in one of my two upcoming trainings. A system that doesn't just work for initial coaching conversations, but supports all areas of our lives. One program runs Nov 6-8 in San Francisco, and the other is an online program that begins in January. Info for both of the programs is below, under the music. Sacred Knowledge and Psychedelic Knowledge - It's all the same You know the story of the boiling frog. It's usually used as a metaphor for social/political oppression, or some other situation that slowly becomes unbearable over time. We always like to thing of the boiler as some faceless force or inhuman system. We don't usually think about how we boil our own frog. It's a hard pill to swallow, seeing how we're often the architect of our own suffering. Especially when it comes to our own...
Sacred Knowledge and Psychedelic Knowledge - It's all the same In the summer of 2000, I spent a week at Casa De Guru Ram Das, the spiritual center of Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga empire in Espanola, New Mexico. I did seva (service). I swept the floor of the practice space, learned how to peel ginger for chai, and chopped potatoes. One morning the guitar guy didn't show, and I was recruited to march around the campground at 4 am, clumsily strumming "May the Long Time Sunshine Upon You" as a...
Listen to the weird psychedelic voices I remember when you could go to a psychedelic conference and see talks with names like "Xenolinguistics, Psychedelics, and the Evolution of Consciousness." Thanks, Diana Slattery, you're the best! Xenolinguistics is, of course, the study of alien languages, much like the kind you see in your psychedelic journeys or in an Allyson Grey Painting. The talk was weird, and it only made partial sense to my puny rational mind, but it was psychedelic. It was...
