This suggestion from his book, Four Agreements, "Be impeccable with your word," is both difficult and important for me. I grew up speaking sarcasm as my first language, and I've got a very strong inner critic. The practice of speaking with sincerity and kindness, especially to myself, has done so much for my healing soul. The practice of catching and interrupting judgment and limitation has been huge. Those of you who know me, know it's a work in progress. Maybe some of you can relate.
I've been thinking about this first agreement, Be impeccable with your word. On the surface, we understand that we don't want to lie, and we don't want to speak poorly of ourselves and others. This is so simple but so hard to do. The wonderful combination of ceremony and mindfulness can give us a front-row seat to our inner monologue and the tools to do something about it. We have a chance to observe our inner critic in slow motion, and to investigate it, to give it a little love, and to point towards a more positive direction. Over time, we can repattern, effectively setting the network's default to self-love. Also, I'd like to acknowledge that the term 'impeccable' can seem insurmountable to some people. Impeccable can sometimes seem like an unattainable idealized goal. In relation to psychedelic work, I sometimes understand this first agreement as 'be sincere in your intention.' This brings the mind back to the moment. Instead of being upset that we're not instantly the person we wish to be, we recognize that we need to do our work, day to day. We might not be able to perfectly embody our intentions now and forever, but everyone can sincerely attempt to move in the direction of their aspirations in every moment that we're mindful. Last but not least, this guideline drastically lessens the chance that I'm going to get into arguments with strangers on the internet. Don't feed the trolls. If this were all it did, it would be worth it! We'll be discussing The Four Agreements this month in the Golden Road Collective on Thursdays at noon Eastern Time.
