If you think you're enlightened, go spend a week with your family - Red Things on Tuesday

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday.

If you think you're enlightened, go spend a week with your family.

This is a famous old Ram Dass quote. He took all that acid, hung out with gurus and saints, and did as much spiritual practice as anyone could. And Thanksgiving still triggered him.

Why should we be different? Who are we that this should be easy?

I don't always know how to relate to my folks, we've certainly had our ups and downs. As I write this from their kitchen table, I wonder if we'll get out unscathed.

It's clear, though, that our fates are tied together. My mind and my nervous system have largely been built by these well-meaning humans who did the best they could. All the work I've done on myself, and I still have their voices in my head, I still see through their eyes. I meet them everywhere I go, their head conveniently placed on the bodies of people that I meet. And god help you if you're an authority figure. Teachers, therapists, yoga teachers, and spiritual advisors get the worst of it.

Anyone who works with clients for any length of time knows about transference. We notice when our clients don't actually see us as much as project upon us. They, like all of us, are seeing the world through lenses crafted in childhood.

There is a beautiful prayer from the Mahabharata that we sing sometimes. Twameva mata cha pita twameva.

Originally a prayer to Krishna (God) it translates to, "You are my mother, you are my father."

It reminds us that our true source is spiritual, not material.

But I sometimes can't help but wonder if it's a nod to projection and transference. Our relationship with the world, our relationship with god, very probably mirrors our relationship with our parents. We mistakenly believe that universal consciousness acts and believes and shares the same values as our folks. How limiting!

All the more reason to become mindful of our interpretations of events and our responses to them. All the more reason to slow down.

Now go out there and be cool to people. Remind yourself that you're seeing them through your old baggage and give them a little grace. Not necessarily for them, but for you. There is rarely a downside to being slightly cooler and graceful with people, even if they are jerks. Sometimes, especially if they are jerks.

No when I started this email, I had a great segway into our Integration Coaching Training Program. It flowed so smoothly.

But the writing got away from me there.

Anyhow, our training program spends a lot of time in inquiry, asking thought-provoking and evocative questions that help people see themselves and their situation clearly. It's not going to magically undo all of your Daddy issues, or give you the skills to do that, but you might start to get better at uncovering them and being conscious of them in a new way. Good coaching offers aha moments similar to those in psychedelic experiences.

This training is a condensed version of the ones we've held in years past. We're more focused, and working to be a little more accessible.

it still covers all the skills and tools you'll need for the Tam Arc of Engagement. You'll know how to take someone safely and effectively through preparation, ceremony, and integration.

The program offers a wide range of tools & coaching models that give you the framework you need to make use of your gifts.

  • Create a coaching practice that can be sustainable
  • Gain powerful skills in mindfulness and somatics
  • Work with material that arises in psychedelic space
  • Create confidence through artful preparation

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. What's going on? What should I do? Integrating the two confusions. In my class "Meditation for the Journey," we dip our toes into the water of Buddhist Psychology and explore how we're tormented both inside our psychedelic experiences and out, by the three poisons: Greed, attachment, clinging, lust (Raga) Aversion, hatred, avoidance, ill-will, revulsion (Dvesha) Confusion, ignorance, misunderstanding, delusion (Moha) When discussing...

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. Getting the trauma out of your tissues isn't enough. You've also got to get the Love in. I walked into yoga this morning with all kinds of feelings. Mad at the world, scared about my fate, you know, usual stuff. And it was stuff I felt like I had to figure out. Stuff I had to solve. It took me about 15 minutes of sweating and breathing to realize the world wasn't the problem. It was me. My emotional issues (which the Buddhists so...

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. I hope you heal from the things you don't talk about. "I hope you heal from the things you don't talk about" is a blessing that has been making the rounds on social media lately. I've heard a lot of blessings, but this one just popped up a few months ago, and it's been everywhere. I think it's a beautiful acknowledgement and a validation that we're all working through endless amounts of grief, rage, and pain. For psychedelic people, it...
