Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. Psychedelic DharmaIt's better to do your dharma imperfectly than to do someone else's dharma perfectly. - Krishna says that in the Bhagavad Gita. (in this case, Dharma loosely translates to mean one's life path, one's way.) We each have a unique makeup. We have individual constitutions, talents, and interests that guide us through life, and that's ok. We needn't try to fit in where we don't. Just because someone we know is dedicated to a career path, political belief, or social cause doesn't men that we have to do just as they do. We're allowed to commit ourselves to what's important to us. We can mind our own business, we don't need to solve other people's puzzles for them. This is an especially good rule of thumb for those of us in the healing professions. We don't need to solve other people's puzzles for them. I was reminded of this important rule when I had my first kid. When you have a kid, you end up with some block puzzles. There's an elephant block and a lion block and a bunny and a giraffe. They come on a board that has the shapes cut out. A little baby toddler can spend quite some time trying to get that lion block in the lion hole. They love it, and get so focused. It's their dharma, if you will. And they do it imperfectly. If you've been a parent, you know, you have to sit on your hands as you watch this. You gently encourage as they fumble over and over. But you refrain from solving the puzzle for them, because it's not your dharma. You could do it perfectly, blindfolded even, but what's the point? It's got nothing to do with you. Sometimes, if we're a counselor or a coach, people come to us for, well, counsel. When this happens, they're often vulnerable, suggestible. They trust us. If they've recently had a psychedelic experience, they might be even more suggestible. We've got to be careful and respectful. We don't want to impose our dharma on them. We don't want to judge their dharma. And we certainly don't want to do their puzzle for them. It's also a reminder to us to work on our own puzzle, because chances are, it's a mess. We don't know what the hell we're doing either. It's a pile of pieces that we hope to get to sometime. We can support each other, though. It's wonderful that we've got community, and through our love and affinity, we can work on ourselves together. Action in the face of evil "How do I take action in the face of evil?" was a question I got in an Instagram Live I offered last night on this topic of individual dharma. Great question. The answer is the same. You take the action that you feel is best. You find where your heart is. Save the whales, feed the children, end war, expand access to healing modalities, whatever. It's certainly not for me to tell you what to do. Just do something, whatever your something is. There are people who will tell you that their cause is THE cause. Up on their moral high horse, they'll tell you that if you aren't as invested in their thing as they are, that you're somehow a bad person. You don't have to listen to them. You just don't. Krishna made us all different for a reason, with different talents and interests. We have different movements in our hearts. To suggest that you need to twist your heart to fit in with someone else's agenda is absurd. We can't be bullied into thinking differently, at least not for long. And to try, well, then we're almost back into the territory of evil, aren't we. This is why I read books like the Gita. It's a confusing world out there, and the fact that we have great books is such a refuge. Having access to the perspectives of the wise is really helpful as we navigate a world densely populated with people who just aren't. I'm sorry, but I don't need the worldview of the cast of 'Jersey Shore' rubbing off on me any more than necessary. I'd much rather marinate in the thoughts of Huang Po, St. Francis, or Rumi. This is how we clarify the mind and the heart. This is how we find our dharma. When Dharma Intersects - Collaboration on a Grand ScaleDo you have too much saturn and not enough moon? Our curriculum is based on the theory that more centered beings make better guides. You will also be offered practices designed to explore the depths of your body, mind, and consciousness with simple clarity. We’ll open Friday with some sound healing, exploring how our voice can be used to express and release in ways that support catharsis while maintaining a regulated nervous system. This will lead into our drum led ceremony. On Saturday, we’ll explore the intersection of visualization and somatics as a wonderful adjunct to a journey. Continuing the theme from Friday, we’ll look at how we support a calm inner environment in through our presence and guidance. This will culminate in our Saturday evening ceremony. Sunday, as we integrate our experience, we’ll explore how our stories can convey deep universal truths, and how taking our seat as a teacher can provide deep value to our students. Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. The Felt Sense of Safety, Relational Safety I've just been thinking about the different ways that we contemplate and experience safety lately. Psychedelic use is risky business, and the presence of a guide, a shaman, or a community container doesn't immediately erase that risk. It can perhaps mitigate some of them, but it also introduces more levels of complexity that we might not immediately intuit. Good integration coaching helps us...
Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. Sometimes I need to unplug my integration. Sometimes, my experiences have been ultra wild, and I’m left scratching my head or shaking in my boots. When that happens, it’s my instinct to overcomplicate things and get all up in my head about it. But that doesn’t help. I need to get out of my head, not go deeper into the confusion. You can’t solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it.These situations ask for simplicity....
Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. There is nothing wrong with you. Try that on for size. A client told me that every time he shared one of his challenges with his old therapist, the therapist would explain it was proof of deep-seated problems. Shame, attachment issues, or some other sort of compulsivity or obsessional behavior. Everything about our friend was broken, or a problem to be solved. After a time, this approach made him more miserable, and he left the...
