The Conspiracy Theory of HealingThis post is about psychedelic integration. Hang in there. I'll get to my point eventually. As our world proliferates with conspiracy theories, we're starting to learn a few things. The first thing we learn is that some of them are true. Deepak Chopra loved hanging out with Jeffrey Epstein, and so did a bunch of other people in various positions of power and reknown. Various creepy and monstrous activities were participated in. We know this to be true now. Second, there are other theories about elites and cabals that seem highly implausible and don't stand up to logical scrutiny. Some are unknowable or unprovable. We may never know whether the chupacabra really existed, and if did, was it a cryptid, an alien, or a government experiment? (For some reference, here's my post from a couple months ago about Deepak.) We've also learned a lot more about how and why the mind creates conspiracy theories. We're meaning-making machines, living in a world steeped in enormous amounts of complex, obfuscated, and contradictory information. We don't know who to trust; we suspect that even the people whom we want to believe share our values are often lying to us and are pretty shady in general. We feel like we can't know what's actually going on in our world or how we got here. The idea that our world is just playing out through arbitrary cause and effect, with no underlying structure or meaning, is pretty terrifying. The thought that nobody is at the wheel doesn't sit well with us. There must be shapeshifting lizard people; the alternative is too much for us to bear. If there is anything more difficult to comprehend than our waking life, it's our psychedelic life. Even more complex information, even more intensity, speed, and fluctuation. Change is wildly constant. And people under the influence might search for meaning with great fervor. I've spoken to people who have had all kinds of conspiratorial ideations. I spoke to a woman who was sure that her friends invited her to do psychedelics with them because it was the best way to let her know that they actually hated her and never wanted to hang out with her ever again. It was hard for her to believe otherwise, even after she spoke to them and they assured her that nothing was further from the truth. They loved her and were very sorrowful that she could even think that. It took her some time to realize that she was projecting deep self-loathing, something that she was eventually able to look at and start to work with. I've spoken to people who are sure that they are being set up in other ways in their journeys. They are filled with the paranoid delusion that they were brought to the ceremony in the first step of some sort of ruination, be it social, financial, legal, or existential. There seems to be a large cache of fear stuck in their field that is playing out in front of them. Maybe they feel like the jig is up, the world is going to discover what an imposter they are, and they will be seen as the phony they are. Everybody has always known. They're just catching on, how embarrassing. I've spoken to a number of people with the near-unshakable belief that they are being tested, that life is a school where they are constantly being taught lessons by God, The Universe, or a group of Ascended Masters. It's a pretty common one as far as these things go. Often, this is a pretty neutral experience. However, if the journeyer feels a lot of shame or carries the thought, "I should have known," they might end up feeling really down on themselves for not learning the lesson sooner. Why don't they already understand all these seemingly simple ideas? It's a pretty good indication that our friend needs to learn self-love, acceptance, and patience as their next lesson. Again, having even a brief glimpse of this phenomenon is not unusual. In all of them, an emotional issue is tasked with making sense of reality. It does the best it can with what it knows of the world, or at least our inner world. This process is part of what is known as 'non-specific amplification. Our fear (or shame or whatever) emerges and writes the script. It can be painful, but with proper integration, it offers profound insight and can guide our inner work for years to come. But there's another conspiracy, and it's my favorite. It comes through sometimes when we've prepared for our journey and can meet the medicine with gratitude, love, and trust. It's the conspiracy of healing. It's similar to Rob Brezney's Pronoia, the unshakable belief that the universe is conspiring to shower you with blessings. The conspiracy of healing is when you realize, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the universe is a loving place. It hits you like a ton of bricks that all the people in your life love you so much, want what's best for you, and have been working together to help you heal and grow. They've gone out of their way to make sure that you're supported in your evolution. They've put in effort, intention, and maybe even a little of their own cash so that you can have an amazing life and even contribute to the well-being of the planet and the people who live on it. Why have you never noticed before? There are innumerable unseen yogis, buddhas, wizards, and jedis all around us. They've been part of the conspiracy of healing for eons. They've been helping you along all this time, and now is the time for them to come clean. They've prepared you enough, and now you're being initiated. The world needs you, they say. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to lovingly, playfully nudge people towards enlightenment, towards joy and freedom. Your sacred charge is to improve their lives, lighten their moods, and remove their fear and confusion. You're part of the conspiracy of healing. Is It True? Who knows, but it's awesome. If you ever have the choice between more awesome and less awesome, choose more. And this is part of how I work with psychedelic integration clients. Creating an awesome worldview and mindset through which to make sense of our journeys and the world. If this sounds like fun, come to the info session for my next course. I’m hosting a live info session for the Psychedelic Integration Coach Training. I’ll discuss how we approach integration as a real discipline rooted in mindfulness, somatics, and spiritual practice, not just intuition or good intentions. We’ll talk about what makes someone effective in this role, how the training is structured, who it’s for, and what people actually do with it in their lives and work. There will be time for questions. It’s not a pitch-heavy call. Just a chance to get a clear feel for the training and see if it’s aligned for you. If this is something you’ve been circling, it's worth a conversation. We meet every Thursday at noon eastern, and there are monthly masterclasses as well. There is also a large archive (over 200 hours) of psychedelic education and past talks. The wonderful people who show up share not only their journeys, but the journeys of those they steward. It's become a place of learning, support, accountability, and peer review. Folks are learning some things from me, but they are also learning from each other. We all face unique challenges as we work in this space, and it's great to have a place where we can bring them for non-judgmental feedback and reflection. You're invited. At their best, psychedelics can illuminate both the personal shadow and the collective shadow, revealing how our individual wounds are intertwined with larger cultural, ancestral, and ecological crises. They offer a unique bridge between neuroscience and spirituality, between therapeutic healing and visionary awakening, helping us reconnect with the larger intelligence of life while also sharpening presence, purpose, and performance. The core of Jahan's dissertation and book, “The Psilocybin Connection”, focus on the idea first proposed by Terence and Dennis McKenna that the symbiotic relationship between humans and psilocybin mushrooms catapulted human evolution. We we explore how this evolution - spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, and physiologically - is still continuing today. When approached with reverence, preparation, and integration, these medicines can become allies in human development - supporting not only personal growth and emotional healing, but the evolution of consciousness itself in service of a more compassionate, awakened, and interconnected world. Take a Breath and Stop Bracing One of the most beautiful things about breathwork is its ability to bring smoothness, grace, and ease back into our lives. So many of us are holding our breath. We're frozen. We're frozen in our movements, our activities, and our ambitions. Even if we do take steps toward our dreams, we might do so in a stilted, hesitant manner. We brace, as if we're expecting to be slammed by universal resistance. We hold our breath, as if we're about to plunge into freezing...
The point of psychedelics is not to just do psychedelics. The point of psychedelics is not to just do psychedelics. We know that if we do too many, too often, (or too much too fast) we might end up getting a little weird or a little burnt out. We might end up thinking too many weird thoughts, coming up with strange ideas, like perhaps our entire friend group is comprised of reincarnated healers, shamans, heroes, and warriors of light who chose to come back to earth to fight for goodness and...
Native of Eternity - Rest In Peace, Lorin Roche Lorin Roche changed my life, and on April 18th, he died. I'm very sad about it. I thought I'd get a chance to speak to him again. We chatted a little a few months ago, and I sent him a picture of my kids. I guess that's it. I cried throughout yoga class this morning. I wonder what the teacher thought. I found his work in 2008, when I was starting to dive into the Vijnana Bhairava Tantras, a meditation encyclopedia. While most of the translations...
