Egomania and your Personal Brand - Red Things on Tuesday

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday.

Egomania and your Personal Brand

In the movie "I Heart Huckabees," Jude Law's character Brad is an egomaniac. Most of the characters are, but Brad really manages to illustrate a phenomenon that many integration coaches and therapists deal with in their practice. It's an old movie, so you may not remember it, even if you've seen it, but it's worth a rewatch.

It's the need to prove we exist, and that we exist in a particular way. It's the need to construct an ego that is solid and impermeable so that we need not feel any distress or insecurity in the face of difficulty or uncertainty.

We do this with stories. Stories we tell ourselves, and stories we tell others.

There are quiet voices in our heads constantly repeating stories in the liminal spaces of our minds. They reinforce ideas of who we must be in order to be safe, loved, and respected. We tell those stories because we think we have to in order to be our selves.

Whether we know it or not, we're made of stories. And we use those stories to communicate who we are to others.

Sometimes we tell the stories to others, putting on our best raconteur hat and sharing episodes of the myth that is us.

Sometimes it's written on our face or in our posture. We were in New Mexico last summer, and I had to explain to the boy why people's faces looked like beautiful but weathered leather. These are faces you don't see in New England. At four years old, he's learning about shared stories and the impact that place has on who we become.

Fear, anger, shame, and then like are all expressed in habitual twitches and tensions. They create chronic stress and a twisted frame. They lead to inconsistencies in affect, posturing, awkward pauses, and boisterous overcompensation. It's easy to see in others, but we're somehow convinced that we do a great job of hiding behind those stories of ours.

I'm always on the lookout for repetitive scripts in conversations with both clients and teachers. What is the ratio of spontaneous creative expression to contrived scripting? What am I being asked to believe? What is being sold to me? These are good places to explore in coaching conversations. To see what's under the surface, what's being served, what's being defended.

I'm not trying to demonize storytelling. I love a good story. The question is, is the story bringing us closer together, or is it keeping people at a distance? Is opening us up for greater intimacy and self-knowledge, or is it a wall designed to keep out anything that might shake our view of the world or ourselves?

This is a great theme for life, for integration practice, and will also be one of the themes of our upcoming retreat. (Spet 26-28)

We'll explore how to ask the kinds of questions that help us safely look at who we are under our pretense and story, there will be excercises that allow people to be more mindful and intentional with their integration coaching, so that a deeper relationship and awareness can emerge.

When we offer this kind of deep inquiry to ourselves and do it as a regular practice, it puts us in a place where we can offer it to others. (if we want to!)

We'll be doing this on our fall retreat. You'll receive instructions in theories and practices that make this possible in your life and your work.

You'll have an opportunity to practice this with your peers and ask engage in rich discussions to enrich your learning.

Space holders, guides, and coaches need to have an understanding of how the mind works and tools that their client on a deep level before, during, and after their journey.

🌈 Core Competencies of a Psychedelic Integration Coach - Zoom

Wednesday, August 6th at 8pm Eastern
Join Here

Being a good psychedelic integration coach requires you to be a good coach. ‘Psychedelic Integration’ is what we call in the business, a ‘niche’. It’s good to have a niche. It helps us focus on where we put our attention, and who we most want to serve. But the core skills of showing up to be present for someone as they evoke a wiser part of themselves that can see through patterns of sabotage and embody new possibilities, well that transcends niche. It’s something you want your coach to be able to do whether you are talking about psychedelics, relationships, leadership, or anything else. It’s essential.

We’re going to detail what we think make for a decent coach. Some of them will have to do with things a coach should be able to ‘DO’. Some of them will have to do with things a coach should ‘BE’. And while you’re here, you’ll get a little bit of a sense about our coaching program, should that be something you’re interesting in attending. You’ll be able to get more of a feel for what we’re offering, and how you’ll grow as a result.

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. Sometimes I need to unplug my integration. Sometimes, my experiences have been ultra wild, and I’m left scratching my head or shaking in my boots. When that happens, it’s my instinct to overcomplicate things and get all up in my head about it. But that doesn’t help. I need to get out of my head, not go deeper into the confusion. You can’t solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it.These situations ask for simplicity....

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. There is nothing wrong with you. Try that on for size. A client told me that every time he shared one of his challenges with his old therapist, the therapist would explain it was proof of deep-seated problems. Shame, attachment issues, or some other sort of compulsivity or obsessional behavior. Everything about our friend was broken, or a problem to be solved. After a time, this approach made him more miserable, and he left the...

I don't want to brag (I want to brag), but I've got some pretty brilliant friends who have written some pretty great-looking books that have just come out. I'm looking forward to digging into their books, and it's also my pleasure to share them with you as well. In all...
