Insight is not excellence; excellence requires practiceI was at a lovely, spiritual, daylong event over the weekend. It included a ritual designed for breakthrough and transformation. We broke into small groups, and it was clear this was the first time our group leader had ever led this practice. He was sincere and devoted, but he had to read the steps off of a printout, and stumbled more than once. I had to suspend my cynicism. But you know what? It worked. I felt something, I was moved. As clunky as it was, I was happy to do it, and I gained a little insight. We're all clunky sometimes. I'm clunky a lot. At my first yoga teacher training, we all joked about how many bad yoga classes we were going to teach. It wasn't a contest, but I might have ended up the winner. After a few years, I started to get better. Eventually I was even good. Because it became embodied. Through practice, I learned how my body responded to poses and sequences. In the laboratory of my studio, the energy of the asana started to reveal itself. At the feet of teachers seasoned over decades, I learned best practices, methodology, and philosophy. I became a teacher I could be proud of. This is integration. This is becoming the person you can be proud of. The facilitator or guide or coach you can be proud of. Folks get integration wrong when they think that an entheogenic insight should lead instantly to new behavior patterns or a brand new personality. They don't realize it takes practice. "I got stressed out, and I responded the way I always have in the past!" Of course you did. The habit is in there deep. Neuroplastic change doesn't happen all at once. In the somatic coaching world, they say that true transformation has occurred when we're able to respond in alignment with our values, even under stress. This takes practice. We need to practice. In our personal lives, in our professional lives. I hope my guy from the weekend keeps practicing his ritual. I'm sure he'll memorize it. He'll know it by heart, literally. It will keep opening up and deepening for him. I hope much the same for all of us who practice. And, if I may, this is why my coaching training programs and 1:1 coaching focus on this kind of practical transformation. It's almost more of an initiation. You take the coaching tools, or the life skills, and you try them again and again. Terribly at first, of course. Improving excruciatingly slowly. But that's how it goes. That's how it gets in there. I don't know who needs to hear this, but you'll get it. The change you want, it will come. Just keep practicing, you clunky old soul, you. Bad Trips, Catharsis, and Breathwork I've got to be honest. I don't think that catharsis is the pinnacle of the psychedelic journey. People seem very attached to their emotional releases; they love rolling around on the floor wailing. I think this has diminishing returns. I think it's part of the zeitgeist. People are told that they've been repressing their emotions for too long (which is probably true), and that the path to healing lies in feeling their emotions (which is partly true). What...
Coming Down Gently. Sometimes we think our journey will last forever. And sometimes we think that's awesome, and sometimes we think that's terrible. I've been in both states. I've had the thought, "I'm stuck like this now. I'm going to be this confused and scared forever." I've also had the thought, "This is bliss, I want to be here forever." It's never been the case. They've always ended. I come out a little different each time, but still, they've never been eternal. I've had experiences...
Building a mind that is bigger, funnier, and sexier Here's one of my favorite litmus tests. “A quicker intelligence test, which also indicates the trajectory of your development, is this: If the world seems to be getting bigger and funnier all the time, your intelligence is steadily increasing. If the world seems to be getting smaller and nastier all the time, your stupidity is steadily increasing.” - Robert Anton Wilson, The Illuminati Papers “The only sensible goal, then, is to try to build...
