Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. Turning Poison into MedicineI recently learned the reason for Black Sabbath's unique, heavy, psychedelic sound. It turns out that the guitarist, Tommy Iommi lost the tips of two of his fingers when he was working as a machinist. He had to relearn how to play, and he had to play differently. What resulted has become one of the most iconic sounds in rock music. He could have given up. We've all had unpleasant stuff happen to us. The question is whether we let it define us, or do we let it inspire us. We've all had our hearts broken. It's our choice to let it make us tender or brittle. And let's not forget about Bill Wilson, the LSD superfan who taught that 'spiritual experiences' (wink wink) could transform self-centered alcoholics who ruined everything they touched before dying horrible, painful deaths. By embracing what they had been hiding from, they had the potential to become deeply caring, community-minded, and service-oriented individuals. He describes the process of turning poison into medicine in this section of The AA Big Book. "If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us — sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them."
It's a pretty sweet deal, if you believe what's written in what just might be the most read psychedelically inspired book in the world. So, if I might ask you, in my best bartender voice, "What's Your Poison?" What is the issue you face that, if overcome, would really take you to the next level? How can you rise to the occasion of your own challenging journey of a life? When I have these kinds of calls with my integration clients, fantastic new ideas always emerge. This is a great theme for life, for integration practice, and will also be one of the themes of our upcoming retreat. (Spet 26-28) Turning poison into medicine in an inner, somatic alchemy. It's about recognizing what you're holding onto and armoring against with deep tension. It's about recognizing that our defensiveness and clinging are a complex array of thoughts, emotions, sensations, activity, and nervous system impulses. We are invited to start teasing that apart. We're asked to soften our resistance to looking at these in a clear and precise manner. And, if we're lucky, we're given support to do these things in a safe, comfortable environment. When we offer this kind of deep inquiry to ourselves and do it as a regular practice, it puts us in a place where we can offer it to others. (if we want to!) We'll be doing this on our fall retreat. You'll receive instructions in theories and practices that make this possible in your life and your work. You'll have an opportunity to practice this with your peers and ask engage in rich discussions to enrich your learning. Space holders, guides, and coaches need to have an understanding of how the mind works and tools that their client on a deep level before, during, and after their journey. Learn more about our retreat on the event info page. On top of that, the food is organic, the land is lush and magical, and it's peak season for watching the changes of the leaves. Reach out if you have any questions. Before we had psychedelic playlists, we had albums like "Passion" by Peter Gabriel It's a journey from beginning to end. Soulful, poignant, and profound. I'd give the whole album a listen. It's supreme. Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. Sometimes I need to unplug my integration. Sometimes, my experiences have been ultra wild, and I’m left scratching my head or shaking in my boots. When that happens, it’s my instinct to overcomplicate things and get all up in my head about it. But that doesn’t help. I need to get out of my head, not go deeper into the confusion. You can’t solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it.These situations ask for simplicity....
Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday. There is nothing wrong with you. Try that on for size. A client told me that every time he shared one of his challenges with his old therapist, the therapist would explain it was proof of deep-seated problems. Shame, attachment issues, or some other sort of compulsivity or obsessional behavior. Everything about our friend was broken, or a problem to be solved. After a time, this approach made him more miserable, and he left the...
