You're the common denominator of all your problemsOne of the most beautiful parts of this work is realizing how our beliefs limit our reality. There are some who love to intone the sacred adage, "your beliefs create your reality," but I think this perhaps misses the mark. It's only half the story. It's more likely that our beliefs limit our reality. This explains why there are scads of new agers staring into mirrors, desperately chanting "I am abundant" while noting changes. Opportunity after opportunity slips through their fingers, if any even appear for them at all. It's hard watching a client, student, or loved one make the same mistake over and over again. It's tough when they ask questions like, "Why do things like this always happen to me? Why are people/men/women/coworkers always like this?" knowing that your answers will fall on deaf ears. It's even more painful when those deaf ears are ours. When we're stuck or confused or tormented by a seemingly random stream of problems that really, truly appear to be coming out of nowhere. It's hard to realize that these are not isolated incidents. There are no isolated incidents. We are the common denominator of all of our problems. It's the hardest thing to admit, and it's the hardest thing to see. We're like fish in the water of our own belief systems. Our way of seeing is the most natural thing to us; we have no reason to believe that our deeply entrenched perspective of the world is not reality. If we've grown up with feelings of being misunderstood, hopeless, out of control, rejected, or whatever, it's going to affect the way we view the world. We might see threats where there are none. We might assume we're going to be pushed out of the community, or that people are going to take advantage of us. On a deep level, we're certain of it, and we see the world through that certainty. Belief is the precursor to action. We do the things we do because we believe the things we believe. All of our idiosyncrasies and unhelpful habits make perfect sense from our perspective. We can't help but do what we do; it's always the most logical choice for us. We don't see reality, so we don't act rationally. We're overly defensive, aggressive, egomaniacal, or self-deprecating. And other people, who have their own issues, respond in kind. We find ourselves dealing with the same issues on multiple fronts, blaming everybody else. Good plant medicine practice, good yoga practice, and good coaching conversations give us the opportunity to finally see the root issues. There are ways to feel our old feelings safely, mindfully, without being retraumatized by them. There are ways to acknowledge our years of folly and ignorance without succumbing to shame. We can create personalized practices and relational experiements that allow us to heal old wounds, develop new traits, and open to new possibilities. Just so happens that this is a topic we cover in our integration coaching training. We explore how to have deep, exploratory conversations that cut to the roots of our issues, and also how to facilitate co-creative sessions to design work to integrate these parts of our shadow as well. It's a program focused on skills training and coaching communication skills. We're committed to giving you the tools you need to create, hold, and navigate containers for transformation. Our Integration Coaching Training Program begins in September, and there is an info session next week: Training Info SessionFriday, March 27th at 3pm Eastern time: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mt-tam-psychedelic-integration-coaching-training-info-call-tickets-1985408746005?aff=oddtdtcreator Ever spend a couple hours watching old surf videos? Rick Griffin, poster artist, goes surfing The Golden Road - Mentorship, Peer Support, Supervision, and Skill Building for Serious Psychonauts and Healing ProfessionalsThe Golden Road has evolved into a wonderful group of practitioners. We meet every Thursday at noon eastern, and there are monthly masterclasses as well. There is also a large archive (over 200 hours) of psychedelic education and past talks. The wonderful people who show up share not only their journeys, but the journeys of those they steward. It's become a place of learning, support, accountability, and peer review. Folks are learning some things from me, but they are also learning from each other. We all face unique challenges as we work in this space, and it's great to have a place where we can bring them for non-judgmental feedback and reflection. You're invited. Click here to join Sound and Music as Healing with Even Glenn AdamsMarch 23rd, 2:00 to 3:30pm Eastern Time In this talk we'll explore the ways that sound and music can support clients in processing experiences and emotions, regardless of whether you're playing an instrument or using a playlist. Evan will discuss a brief history of the role of music in ceremony and healing arts, the importance of context, and the inherent power of music and sound to evoke emotions, memories, and even altered states. He'll offer actionable ways to incorporate music, and share case studies of the wide range of responses that both clients and practitioners may experience. Evan will also discuss the important roles that both embodiment and dissociation play in the process, and how best to select music that can help clients enter a trance state. About Evan: As a sound healing practitioner, Evan Glenn Adams weaves his years of experience as a composer and multi-instrumentalist with his study of somatics and trance induction to create immersive soundscapes that allow listeners to access deep states of presence, relaxation, and peace. Honoring lineages of both magic and science, Evan creates a supportive space for listeners to journey into their inner worlds, and relate with the parts, memories, and sensations that are present. $30, or membership to the Golden Road The Tam Integration Coaching Training Program - Fall CohortThis cohort is full, and we're now interviewing for the fall session. Nibble the Product You may have seen the video of the McDonald's CEO pretending to eat his company's new burger. He appeared stiff, alien, and uncomfortable. I thought it was his first day on the job, maybe his first day on the planet. He referred to it as 'Product' before managing the tiniest nibble, obviously disgusted. A bunch of other burger joints made parodys, showing that they made burgers that could actually be enjoyed. I wanted to make my own, where I gobbled down some mushrooms or...
Deepak Chupacabra A long time ago, at a coffee shop far, far away, I had a friend who liked to make stickers. He would cut and paste images by hand, then take them to the copy shop to make zine style black and white stickers. They got slapped on lamp posts or carefully hidden in the corner of a store window. You’d see them on the back of street signs. The stickers were funny, subversive takes on popular culture. They were smart, absurdist critiques that left a lot open to interpretation. One...
The only thing that kills a demon is love - Mickey Knox This post contains spoilers of "The Illuminatus Trilogy," Which I think is fair, because it was published in 1975. Nevertheless, be forewarned. When I was an 18-year-old college freshman, I read Robert Anton Wilson's "Illuminatus Trilogy." I remember sitting on my dorm bed next to my headshop tapestry, getting my introduction to conspiracies and secret societies. In it, many factions fought for humanity's future in ways both subtle and...
